Deep from the hallowed aisles of The World’s Music Library for Holidays, Nuclear Blast has retrieved the perfect soundtrack to your upcoming family gatherings: HELL’s Curse & Chapter - a classy combination of Shakespeare, Aleister Crowley, and NWOBHM - out today in North America. Why play this album in the living room and not Kenny G’s smooth jazz Miracles Holiday Album? Because a touching story of extended family is at the center of why British heavy metallers HELL exist at all. HELL guitarist, songwriter, and album producer Andy Sneap explains in his interview in the new issue of Decibel Magazine (#111, January 2014): “I was dying to play guitar and kept bugging this guy a year older than me to introduce me to his teacher, who turned out to be [founding HELL member, guitarist, and vocalist] Dave [Halliday]. I didn’t even know Dave was in a band at the time – he was just this crazy long-haired guy who was really cool. I got on with him like a house on fire, and it made me really get into guitar because I got on with him so well. Unfortunately, he never got to see where [playing guitar] took me in life and how it influenced me. But when he died, he left me all the rights to all his songs – and all his equipment. He left me everything, pretty much, in his will. I don’t know why he had faith in me, to be honest. He must’ve seen something in me, I guess. But having that, it really inspired me. Then meeting the guys [original members Kev Bower on guitar & keys, Tony Speakman on bass, and Tim Bowler on drums] again and being in the position I’m in as producer has allowed me to do it. To give these three – I mean, I used to look up to them so much when I was a kid – an opportunity to do this again, it’s been great. I’ve actually managed to make some money for [Dave Halliday’s] family through the publishing side of things. It’s come full circle.” Accomplished British television actor David Bower (brother to band member Kev Bower) has been HELL’s frontman since the band’s acclaimed 2011 full-length debut, Human Remains. So yeah, life isn’t always hell, folks. We hope any discomfort experienced at family gatherings is only temporary and that the family food menu includes some of your favorite comfort foods from childhood.
