Diese neue Pressung wurde auf einer speziell angefertigten Neumann VMS80-Drehmaschine mit rundumerneuerter Elektronik aus den restaurierten 192kHz-Mastern der Original-Masterbänder der Trident Studios geschnitten, ohne zusätzliche Bearbeitung bei der Übertragung. Nicht nur das Album, auch sein Cover hat einen festen Platz in der Geschichte der Rockmusik inne. Es zeigt Bowie in seinem heute längst ikonischen Make-up mit dem rot-blauen Blitz im Gesicht – ein Bild, das sich weltweit unauslöschlich ins kulturelle Gedächtnis eingeprägt hat (bis hin zum offiziellen Emoji). Das Coverfoto wurde von Brian Duffy geschossen, der auch die Cover von LODGER (1979) und SCARY MONSTERS (AND SUPER CREEPS) (1980) fotografierte.
